A grand jury has indicted a man for the shooting deaths of three Muslim university students in the eastern U.S. state of North Carolina.
Local media reported 42-year-old Craig Hicks is facing three counts of first degree murder in the deaths of Deah Barakat, 23, his wife Yusor Abu-Salha, 21, and her sister Razan Abu-Salha, 19. Hicks was a neighbor of the three near the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
He was also indicted on a firearms charge.
The shooting has sparked cries of religious injustice in the U.S. and abroad. Police have said they have not uncovered evidence Hicks acted out of hatred for his neighbor's faith. They say the shooting occurred after a dispute over parking, though federal officials have started a preliminary inquiry to determine whether any federal laws, including hate crime laws, were violated.
Hicks is scheduled to be in court on the murder charges March 4. He remains in jail without bond.
