Thousands of Kurdish peshmerga fighters in northern Iraq were on the verge Friday of breaking a months-long terrorist siege at Mount Sinjar that could open an escape route for persecuted minorities trapped in the area.
Iraqi Kurdish officials said some 8,000 peshmerga, backed by U.S.-led airstrikes, drove Islamic State extremists from a key district north of the mountain.By late in the day, authorities said the Kurds were poised to retake the entire area near the Syrian border.
Efforts to open a corridor offering escape to thousands of Yazidi minorities trapped since August were ongoing late Friday, with peshmerga fighters moving to clear areas south of the mountain.
Islamic State fighters captured almost a third of Iraq and Syria earlier this year, plunging the region into deep crisis.
In early August, extremists captured the Iraqi towns of Sinjar and Zumar, prompting tens of thousands of Yazidis to flee to the mountain, where they became trapped.
Many were eventually rescued, making their way through Syria back into Iraq. But thousands remained stuck on the mountain.
The breakthrough follows reports Thursday that recent airstrikes in Iraq killed three top Islamic State leaders.
Among those identified as killed were a deputy ((Haji Mutazz)) to Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the Islamic State military emir in Iraq ((Abd al-Basit)), and a mid-level official serving as the emir of Mosul ((Radwin Talib)).
The officials say the killings occurred between mid-November and early December.
U.S. military officials have credited the more than 1,300 airstrikes and a stronger Iraqi security force for having a "significant effect" on Islamic State operations in Iraq. But a top commander warned the fight is far from over, adding it might take three years or more to rout the militants.
