United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called for political dialogue between Russia and Ukraine as the solution to the crisis in Ukraine.
Mr. Ban made his remarks during a stop in New Zealand Tuesday, a day after Ukrainian separatist leader Andrei Purgin said he is ready to discuss a cease-fire and prisoner exchange.
Purgin spoke at the first round of peace talks that opened Monday in the Belarussian capital, Minsk.
The leader of the self-proclaimed republic in Donetsk, and the pro-Russian separatists said they are willing to remain part of Ukraine if they are granted more autonomy.
In other news, a Russian official said a reported comment by President Vladimir Putin that Russia could capture Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, in two weeks was taken out of context. Yuri Ushakov, a top aide to Mr. Putin, told journalists that the quote in Italy's La Repubblica newspaper had a totally different meaning.
That newspaper reported this week that Mr. Putin had told European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso in a phone conversation that if he wanted, he could take Kyiv in two weeks.
On Monday, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko accused Russia of "open aggression" in his country.
NATO estimates at least 1,000 Russian troops are in Ukraine. Russia has repeatedly denied it has any troops there.
European leaders are accusing Russia of waging war against Ukraine.
