Just days after signing a $2 trillion U.S. coronavirus rescue package, President Donald Trump on Tuesday floated the idea of spending the same amount on vast repairs of the country’s infrastructure.
“With interest rates for the United States being at ZERO, this is the time to do our decades long awaited Infrastructure Bill,” Trump said on Twitter. “It should be VERY BIG & BOLD, Two Trillion Dollars, and be focused solely on jobs and rebuilding the once great infrastructure of our Country!”

On several occasions during his three-plus years in the White House, Trump has suggested undertaking a massive rebuild of the country’s aging and crumbling roads and bridges, as well as expanding and updating airports and other public buildings.
The efforts were often labeled as Infrastructure Week to focus on the reconstruction needs; however, with no subsequent agreement between the Trump administration and Congress on exactly what would be repaired, any new mention of an Infrastructure Week became a bit of a running joke in Washington as evidence of government ineptitude.
The sharp increase in U.S. unemployment caused by the coronavirus pandemic, with thousands of businesses shutting their doors, could give new impetus to fixes in the U.S. infrastructure as a way to help put some Americans back to work once the threat of the virus has ended.
The initial coronavirus rescue aid package included hundreds of billions of dollars in loans and payouts to corporations and most Americans to shore up their business and family finances.
Congressional leaders have already started talking about another rescue package, although it is not likely to be drafted and voted on anytime soon, since lawmakers have left Washington to cope with the coronavirus in their communities.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi, leader of the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives, says she is open to talks on infrastructure spending.
“The president said during the campaign — and since — infrastructure was a priority for him. So that’s why we believe that in terms of recovery, that’s probably the most bipartisan path that we can take,” Pelosi said Monday.
Pelosi said she also would want to include “more direct payments” to Americans in a new spending bill, more money for state and local governments, increased protections for workers, more assistance for hospitals and nursing homes and “more opportunity for family and medical leave.”
