French security forces say they have established contact with two suspects who are holed up in a warehouse with a hostage, two days after they are believed to have killed 12 people at the Paris headquarters of Charlie Hebdo magazine.
The suspects have reportedly told police negotiators that they are prepared to die as martyrs. Police have confirmed that the suspects are holding at least one hostage.
Police converged Friday on the industrial town of Dammartin-en-Goele, northeast of Paris, after a two-day manhunt. Helicopters, police vans and fire vehicles, fighting rainy conditions, have surrounded an industrial park in the town located about 40 kilometers northeast of Paris.
The town is on lockdown with the local mayor warning residents to stay indoors. The town is not far from Charles DeGaulle international airport.
French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve has confirmed that an operation to capture the suspects is under way. He spoke moments after an emergency meeting with the president, prime minister and police officials.
More than 88,000 police and security forces are searching for the brothers.
A third suspect, 18-year-old Hamyd Mourad, surrendered Wednesday. It remains unclear what might be his connection to the gunmen.
