Britain and the United States have marked the 25th anniversary of the bombing of a U.S. jetliner over the town of Lockerbie, Scotland. Officials, family members and others held memorial services honoring the 270 victims killed when Pan Am Flight 103 exploded on December 21, 1988.
Lockerbie is located about 120 kilometers south of Glasgow, near the border with England. Reverend Sandy Stoddart led a memorial service in a local church.
"A bomb was planted on Pan Am 103, but it was an accident that the aircraft happened to come down on and around Lockerbie. This misfortune meant that the town had the agony of the aftermath, but then also the privilege of caring for the families of those who died."
Memorial services also were held in the United States as most of the victims were Americans. Whitney Davis traveled from Oregon to Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia to honor her sister, who was among those killed.
Former Libyan intelligence officer Abdel Baset al-Megrahi was convicted of the bombing and sentenced to life in prison. He always denied involvement in the terrorist attack, saying he was an airline employee, not an intelligence agent. His family and friends in Libya are demanding a new investigation in the case.
Britain released Megrahi in 2009 on humanitarian grounds. He died of cancer in Libya in 2012.
The plane was traveling from London to New York when the bomb exploded, killing 259 people on board and 11 others on the ground.
