French President Francois Holland blames the Islamic State terrorist group for an act of war, following the horrific string of attacks around Paris Friday night. At least 129 people are dead and scores of others are wounded. Police say eight assailants are also dead, including seven who apparently blew themselves up.IS has claimed responsibility while France has declared a state of emergency and setting out to identify the killers and search for accomplices. Lisa Bryant was in the streets of Paris Saturday, and has this report for VOA.
Paris resident Adama Ndoye waited in long line to give blood Saturday morning - just across the street from a pair of night spots targeted in Friday night's attacks.
Ndoye, originally from Senegal, said he hoped his blood will help at least one of those wounded in the assault. Look around you, he said, there are Christians, Muslims and Jews — all here to help out.
Witnesses said a gunman opened fire on Le Carillon bar and Le Petit Cambodge restaurant, killing at least a dozen people.Both are popular spots located near the Saint Martin canal in northern Paris. Flowers, candles and notes were strewn in front of the two buildings.
These acts of solidarity are taking place around the city, as Parisians come to grips with the scale of their second major terrorist attack this year.
Residents and even tourists are flocking to blood banks to donate blood for the dozens of victims in the string of nearly simultaneous attacks that took place around the capital. About a mile or so away, more flowers were piled at the Place de la Republique - where massive demonstrations took place during January's terrorist attacks.
There were more flowers near the Bataclan, the music spot where the deadliest attack took place Friday night.
A French reporter filmed the horrific events from his apartment. At least 82 people were killed during the Bataclan assault. Three assailants reportedly blew themselves up. A fourth was shot by police. French radio reports at least one has been identified.
French police have cordoned off the site. A young woman called Solveig is trying to reach her boyfriend who lives near the Bataclan. Police are still blocking his street and he can't get out.
Solveig says her boyfriend heard firing at the concert hall, then saw about a dozen people sprinting out a back door. He barricaded himself in his toilet. One of his neighbors was shot dragging in a wounded man to safety.
Police say that in addition to the four attackers at the Bataclan, another four assailants are also dead. Some of them are also said to have blown themselves up, including at the French soccer stadium, where spectators had been watching a match between France and Germany. Media reports say a Syrian passport was found near one of the bodies there, though with migrant smugglers doing a brisk trade in fake Syrian passports, its authenticity could not be immediately confirmed.
The attacks come just two weeks before France hosts a major climate change summit, just outside Paris. French media report there are no plans to date to cancel it. There are also fears the attacks may hit the city's key tourism industry.
French President Francois Hollande, who was at the stadium for the match, has denounced an "act of war" by the Islamic State group in Syria, which has claimed responsibility for the attacks. Faced with war, he said, France must take appropriate action.
