Laos and the US Co-hosted the first ever Conference of Friends of the Lower Mekong
On Monday and Tuesday of this week, Laos and the US co-hosted the first-ever “Extraordinary Friends of the Lower Mekong” conference in Pakse, Champassak Province to discuss economic growth and environmental sustainability in the Mekong region, including the connections between water resources, energy needs and food security. H.E. Saleumxay Kommasith, Laos’ Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Counselor of the U.S. Department of State, H.E. Thomas A. Shannon co-chaired the meeting.
In his opening address on behalf of the Lao government, Mr Saleumxay said Laos attached great importance to the Friends of the Lower Mekong Forum, and affirmed his country’s readiness to develop the Lower Mekong region in a sustainable manner. He also said Laos will share ideas and experience with partners in the forum to improve sustainable economic development in the region, which will contribute to poverty reduction and prosperity in the lower Mekong countries and the region as a whole.
Mr Saleumxay also praised the assistance to Laos by the US and other Friends of the Lower Mekong in the various development projects such as English language training and three projects to modernize Laos’ infrastructure with overall spending of 1.7 million dollars, which will use modern US technology in the development of more sustainable hydropower projects in Laos.
Attending the conference are delegations from Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, Viet Nam, the United States, Australia, the European Union, Japan, Republic of Korea, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Netherlands, France, Sweden the Asian Development Bank, the World Bank Group, and the Mekong River Commission Secretariat.
The Friends of the Lower Mekong (FLM) is a broad dialog that improves donor coordination in the Mekong sub-region, and supports integrated cooperation between and among Lao PDR, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, and the United States. FLM members include Australia, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, the European Union, Asian Development Bank, and World Bank.
