A Lao Airlines flight carrying 44 people has crashed into the Mekong River, killing everyone on board.
Thailand's foreign ministry said the plane was travelling from the Lao capital Vientiane to the southern town of Pakse when it went down. It said five Thai nationals were among the dead.
VOA-Lao talked to a Lao Airlines employee in Vientiane by phone and received confirmation of the crash. The employee said the airplane, an ATR , went down in bad weather, and that airlines officials are coordinating rescue efforts. He declined to elaborate as details of the crash are sketchy and uncertain.
Thai television pictures showed the plane, half submerged in the river, with what appeared to be bodies lying on the banks.
Lao National TV issued a brief report not long after the crash, saying the doomed flight was QV 301 that left Vientiane at 2:45 PM and was scheduled to land in Pakse at 3:55 when it suddenly encountered bad weather upon approaching Pakse. At the time of report, Lao Airlines officials are coordinating rescue efforts with concerned parties, and talking to victims' families.
