Voting is under way in Japan's southernmost prefecture of Okinawa in a closely-watched election for governor that could effect plans for the relocation of a U.S. air base.

The election is the first chance people of the island will get to send a message about incumbent Governor Hirokazu Nakaima's decision to allow landfill work in the city of Nago in preparation for the relocation of U.S. Marine Corps Futenma Air Station from the city of Ginowan.

Governor Nakaima is running against two opponents who want the relocation canceled and a third who wants to put the move to a referendum.

The Japanese government vows to push ahead with the relocation plan regardless of the result of the gubernatorial election.

Okinawans have for decades complained about the daily noise pollution at Futenma and the dangers of an aircraft crash in the densely populated area.
