U.S. President Barack Obama says Iran can play a constructive role in Iraq if it follows the U.S. lead in pressing for an inclusive government that respects all sides within Iraq.
But Mr. Obama warned Thursday that Iran could worsen the situation if it comes into the conflict solely as an armed force that backs the Shiite-led government.
The president said at the White House that the United States has indicated to Iran that it is important for it to avoid steps that might encourage the kind of sectarian splits that could lead to civil war in Iraq.
He said the United States has deep differences with Iran on several issues, pointing out that the bloody situation in Syria is in part due to Iran coming in "hot and heavy on one side."
Mr. Obama said if Iran views the region "solely through sectarian frames," Iranians could find themselves fighting in a whole lot of places at the expense of the Iranian economy and the Iranian people.
