Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged Wednesday the murder of opposition leader Boris Nemtsov was politically motivated, while Moscow said it has identified suspects in the case.

President Putin told a televised meeting of the Interior Ministry that Russia should be freed of high-profile crimes, "including those with a political motive."

"We must finally rid Russia of the disgrace and tragedy of the kinds of things we recently saw and experienced. I mean the audacious murder of Boris Nemtsov in the very center of the capital," he said.

Nemtsov, a 55-year-old outspoken critic of Moscow, was shot in the back four times last week just steps away from the Kremlin.

The director of Russia's main security agency said Wednesday suspects have been identified in the case, according to Russia's Interfax news agency.

"There are always suspects," said Federal Security Service chief Aleksandr Bortnikov. He did not elaborate, but cautioned that investigations are ongoing.

Nemtsov was laid to rest Tuesday in Moscow. Earlier, thousands of people filed past his coffin to pay respect to the charismatic opposition activist.

President Putin has promised a full investigation into the murder, which many opposition activists said was reprisal for Nemtsov's criticism of Moscow.

Many opposition leaders, including anti-Kremlin activist Alexei Navalny, have said Nemtsov was killed either by members of the state security services or a pro-government group acting on the orders of the political leadership of the country.
