MUSIC

Saly: ຄຳວ່າ regret, r e g r e t, regret ເປັນໄດ້ທັງຄຳນາມແລະ
ຕົວຢ່າງຂອງຄຳກິຣິຍາກໍຄື I regret that, ແປວ່າ

Gary’s Tips: Regrets/Sympathy

Larry: Gary’s Tips.

Gary.

UPBEAT MUSIC

Eliz: Now it’s time for Gary’s Tips with Gary Engleton!

Gary: Hello, Elizabeth! Today I’ll be talking about how to
talk about regrets and sympathy.

Eliz: Regrets?

Gary: Yes, things you did or didn’t do in the past, things you
wish you had done differently.

In today’s Business Dialog, Pauline talks about some
of her regrets.

In particular, she wishes she had spent more time with
her family.

She uses the expression, “I wish that...”

Let’s listen.

Pauline: I’ve been here thirty-two years.

I’ve never worked for another company!

Harry: That’s rare these days.

Pauline: I’ve enjoyed my years here, but I wish that
I had spent more time with my kids when
they were growing up.

Harry: I know what you mean.

Gary: Later, she expresses a similar idea, using the phrase
“I regret.”

Pauline: Once he started school, we spent much less
time together.

I regret that, but I’m going to spend lots of
time with my grandkids.

Gary: In Mr. Blake’s conversation with Mr. Chapman, both
men express some regrets about being away from
their families.

Notice how Mr. Blake shows sympathy by using
the expression, “I know what you mean.”

Mr. Chapman also shows sympathy when he says
“That’s tough.”

Chap: (edit out: Very nice.) I’m always so busy at
work that I don’t see my sons as often as I’d like.

Blake: I know what you mean.

I’m on the road three or four months a year.

Chap: That’s tough!

I’ve missed a lot of birthdays and holidays
because of work.

Blake: Me too.

Gary: Talking about regrets and showing sympathy is a
sign of the personal friendship that has developed
between Mr. Blake and Mr. Chapman.

This personal relationship will help strengthen their
business relationship.

Thank you for joining us again for Gary’s Tips.

Eliz: Thanks, Gary

Pauline
