World leaders were quick to condemn the worst terrorist attack on French soil in decades, after masked gunmen shot and killed 12 people at a Paris newspaper known for its satirical humor.
The attack Wednesday killed the editor of Charlie Hebdo, as well as two police officers. The attackers sped away after their noontime shooting rampage. French authorities later identified them in an investigation in which the U.S. offered its full support.
U.S. President Barack Obama said the United States stands beside the people of France in the aftermath of this outrage.
"I think that all of us recognize that France is one of our oldest allies, our strongest allies.They have been with us at every moment when we've -- from 9/11 on, in dealing with some of the terrorist organizations around the world that threaten us.For us to see the kind of cowardly evil attacks that took place today I think reinforces once again why it's so important for us to stand in solidarity with them, just as they stand in solidarity with us."
Mr. Obama called it an attack on journalistic freedom and freedom of the press. He said it underscored how much the terrorists dislike these freedoms. French President Francois Hollande called the slayings ``a terrorist attack without a doubt,'' and said several other attacks have been thwarted in France "in recent weeks.''
Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi paid his respects to the French ambassador in Rome. He called the Paris shooting an attack against the free world.
U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon said the horrendous, unjustifiable and cold-blooded crime was meant to divide, but that the world must not fall into this trap.
British Prime Minister David Cameron said the attack was "sickening," while German Chancellor Angela Merkel called it "despicable."
Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott called the attack a "horrific atrocity," but said more like it can be expected because Islamic State has declared war on the world.
The imam of one of France's major cities, Bordeaux, urged Muslims to take to the streets in protest of the Paris attack, calling it "almost an act of war." Tareq Oubrou said after meeting Pope Francis at the Vatican Wednesday that the attack on Charlie Hebdo was "tantamount to what September 11 meant to America."
