Eliz: Welcome once again to “Culture Tips” with Gary Engleton.

Today’s e-mail question is: “What do American companies do to attract new employees?”

Gary: Well, in America today, companies have to compete with each other to hire the most qualified employees.

This is especially true in high-tech industries.

People with up-to-date knowledge can get very attractive offers.

Eliz: What’s an example of an attractive offer, Gary?

Gary: Well, signing bonuses are becoming more common.

That means that you get a large amount of money when you accept a job offer.

Eliz: Really? Even before you start to work? That sounds great!

Gary: Yes, or the company might lease a luxury car for you to use.

It is also common for companies to offer stock or stock options to new employees.

Eliz: So you own part of the company! Nice.

Gary: Yes. Many companies today realize that their greatest strength is the people who work for the company.

That’s why they want to hire the very best people.

Eliz: Thanks, Gary!

That was very informative.
