Officials in eastern Uganda say more than 30 people have died in landslides.

Martin Owor, commissioner for disaster preparedness, told the Reuters news agency that "the landslide pushed huge boulders into a river which burst it banks and the water swept away the people."

Authorities say the death toll is likely to increase as search and rescue teams go through the debris in the foothills of Mountain Elgon, about 250 kilometers from the capital, Kampala.
