Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has kicked off her 2016 campaign as Repubilcan Senator Marco Rubio officially joins the race for the White House.

Clinton stopped for gasoline and to shake a few hands in New York and Pennsylvania on her way to her first formal campaign event in Iowa on Tuesday. The midwestern state is home of the country's first presidential caucus. Many past candidates gave up their campaigns after poor showings in the state.

The former secretary of state announced her candidacy Sunday in an online video, saying she wants to be champion of struggling middle class Americans.

Clinton is the first Democrat to officially join the race to succeed President Barack Obama, who beat her in the 2008 Democratic primaries and cannot run again after serving two terms.

Meanwhile, Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio announced his presidential campaign Monday in Miami. He called Hillary Clinton the candidate of the past while saying he is the candidate of the future.

A Rubio campaign video promotes the 43-year-old son of Cuban immigrants as a "new direction for America." It features clips of speeches critical of the Obama administration and promotes what he says is the need for the U.S. to be a strong world leader.

Rubio is the third Republican to officially enter the race for the 2016 presidential nomination, joining fellow Senators Rand Paul and Ted Cruz. Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and former Florida Governor Jeb Bush are also expected to run.

Recent polls show if the election were held today, Clinton would beat all Republican candidates by a landslide.

But Republican National Committee head Reince Priebus says he believes voters do not trust her.

"Over decades as a Washington insider, Clinton has left a trail of secrecy, scandal and failed policies that cannot be erased from voters' minds," he said.

They include the deadly terror attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, and using an unofficial email account for official business as secretary of state. Republicans also are likely to bring up scandals involving her husband, former president Bill Clinton.
