Burma's president has met with the leader of one of the country's biggest minority groups, the Shan, in a effort to further make peace with ethnic minorities.
Thein Sein held talks with Lieutenant General Yawd Serk.
The president's office said the main obstacle to ending the fighting is the need for the sides to agree on where their troops are allowed to be stationed.
The rebel leader said Mr. Thein Sein agreed with his proposal to form a committee to work toward peace.
Lieutenant General Yawd Serk, leader of Shan State Army, says:
"Even though Myanmar is a country with rich natural resources, the country has lagged behind due to the 60-year-long civil war. We came here to discuss how we can co-operate in the future to end this civil war."
Since independence in 1948, Burma, also known as Myanmar, has faced rebellions from a number of minority groups seeking autonomy.
Sporadic fighting continues with several groups, including the Shan and the Kachin.
