A Pennsylvania judge sentenced Bill Cosby to three to 10 years in state prison Tuesday for drugging and assaulting a woman at the entertainer's home in 2004. The judge, Steven O'Neill, also ordered Cosby to be locked up immediately, denying requests that Cosby be allowed to remain free on bail.

The disgraced entertainer is the first celebrity of the #MeToo era to be convicted since the start of the movement that has brought down numerous powerful men in fields that include entertainment, politics and the media, for misconduct. His wife, Camille Cosby, was not in court when the sentence was announced.

Earlier in the day, the judge labeled Cosby a "sexually violent predator." The designation means Cosby will be required to report quarterly to authorities, and that his name will appear on a sex offender registry sent to neighbors, schools and victims. He must also receive mandatory counseling for the rest of his life.

The first day of the hearing opened Monday with testimony from mental health experts who argued that Cosby deserved the label because of his uncontrollable urge to sexually assault women, and the likelihood that he would do so again if given the chance.

The 81-year-old's lawyers argued that because of his advanced age and faltering health - Cosby is legally blind and uses a cane - it was unlikely he would commit another crime, pointing out that the most recent of the allegations dates back to 2005.

Cosby used to play the role of Dr. Cliff Huxtable in the television situation comedy The Cosby Show and was once known as "America's Dad."

Cosby was convicted earlier this year of three felony counts of aggravated indecent assault for drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand in 2004. Constand is one of more than 60 other women with similar allegations against Cosby, but the only one so far whose complaints have led to a conviction.
