Libyan troops loyal to rogue general Khalifa Haftar attacked Islamist militants in a military offensive launched without government approval.
The city was calm Saturday after the ground and air attacks, but the airport remained closed.
The government condemned the operation, with army chief of staff Abdessalem Jadallah denying any army involvement in the fighting.
Colonel Mohamed al-Hijazi, one of General Haftar's supporters, meanwhile, said the operation was "defending the nation against extremist Islamist militias."
Benghazi -- Libya's second-largest city -- was the starting point of the uprising that overthrew longtime leader Moammar Gadhafi in 2011. Since then, the country has seen militias grow in number and power, stirring violence, chaos and insecurity.
Benghazi was also the site of the September 11, 2012 attack that killed U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and three other Americans.
