Record numbers of Australians and New Zealanders turned out before dawn Saturday to mark the 100th anniversary of the failed landings during World War I at Gallipoli, in what is now Turkey.

Hours later at Gallipoli, Britain's Prince Charles and the prime ministers of Australia and New Zealand spoke of the soldiers' heroism as visitors gathered near the former battlefields.

The goal of the British-led April 25, 1915 attack was to clear a way to the Black Sea for allied navies and to capture Constantinople, the capital of the Ottoman Empire, which was an ally of Germany during the war.The campaign dragged on for eight months and resulted in the deaths of at least 45,000 soldiers on the allied side before its ultimate failure.About double that numver of Ottoman soldiers died.

Since then, ANZAC (Australia, New Zealand Army Corps) Day has come to commemorate the deaths of all Australian and New Zealand soldiers in all wars and conflicts.

It is marked around the world by expatriate Australians and New Zealanders with solemn ceremonies and marches at dawn, when the original landings took place.
