Turkey has formally arrested the country's chairman of Amnesty International's as he awaits trial on charges of being a member of a terrorist organization, according to The Associated Press, which cited Turkey's official Anadolu news agency.
The Turkish news agency did not immediately respond to a request from VOA to confirm the formal arrest of Taner Kilic, who was detained on Tuesday and arrested late Friday.
Amnesty International said in a statement Friday that Kilic's detention was a "mockery of justice" and called for his release.
Kilic and other attorneys were apprehended in the western province of Izmir after being accused of using ByLock, an encrypted mobile messaging application.
The application allegedly is used by followers of U.S.-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, who the Turkish government has accused of masterminding last summer's failed coup and of leading a terror group. Gulen has denied the allegations.
Amnesty International said Kilic denied using the application in his testimony and it's leader, Secretary General Silil Shetty, said Kilic's arrest is "a disregard of human rights and an attempt to silence all those who defend him."
Since the coup attempt in July, Turkish authorities have arrested about 50,000 people and terminated or suspended some 150,000 public servants over alleged links with terrorist groups, including Gulen's network, which Turkey considers a terrorist organization.
