The United States and Turkey tentatively agreed Tuesday on a deal to train and equip moderate Syrian rebels fighting to topple President Bashar al-Assad.

The State Department gave no details on the agreement which it says it hopes to sign soon.

But Pentagon officials have said they hope to send up to 1,000 U.S. forces to train 5,000 Syrian rebel fighters a year, beginning in March.

The training would take place in Turkey, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.

Also, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Tuesday that Syrian forces, backed by Hezbollah fighters, seized several villages from the rebels near Aleppo, Syria's largest city.

The number of casualties in Tuesday's fighting is unclear.

The human rights group says the government forces are seeking to cut off a key rebel supply route between Aleppo and the Turkish border.

Aleppo has been one of the centers of the fighting in Syria, but the United Nations envoy to Syria said Tuesday fighting there might soon stop.

Staffan de Mistura told the Security Council that he had received a commitment from the Syrian government that it would stop airstrikes on Aleppo for six weeks.

De Mistura told the council he will return to Syria to assess whether the government's commitment is possible.

He wants to see a U.N.-monitored "freeze zone'' that will calm violence there, allow more humanitarian aid access and act as the first step toward a wider solution to the conflict.
