The U.S. Senate has confirmed Loretta Lynch as attorney general, five months after her nomination by U.S. President Barack Obama.

Lynch becomes the first black woman in the nation's top law enforcement post, replacing Eric Holder, the first African American man to hold the position.

President Obama said in a statement, "America will be better off" as a result of the Lynch confirmation. "She will bring to bear her experience as a tough, independent, and well-respected prosecutor on key, bipartisan priorities like criminal justice reform."

The president added that she will oversee a large portfolio of cases, including counter terrorism, voting rights, public corruption and white-collar crime.

Lynch has a reputation as a no-nonsense prosecutor, but many Republicans opposed her because of her support for President Obama's executive actions on immigration.

The vote to confirm was 56-43 in the Senate, which must approve all presidential appointees.
