The Iraqi government and Kurdish militia in the country's north have joined forces to help people stranded in the Sinjar mountains after fleeing Islamic State militants. Thousands of minority Yazidis have been trapped on a scorching mountaintop without food and water since last week. U.S. and Iraqi air strikes have opened up some escape routes for the refugees and officials have begun delivering emergency relief. Zlatica Hoke reports that many families got separated during the hasty escape from the militants.
After delivering aid to Yazidi refugees in the Sinjar mountains, this helicopter is airlifting some of the lost children to safe areas of Iraqi Kurdistan. Hundreds of displaced Yazidis who had fled to Syria are now crossing the Tigris River back into Iraq with the help of Syrian Kurdish rebels.
"The Kurdish Workers Party helped us to get here. It was very kind of them and we thank them for taking us here. We spent 11 hours until we reached the border."
"I escaped from the mountain by my foot and walk. From Sinjar mountain to Syria, walking. Just we had a bottle of water, sometimes we drink it.. no more. Not (just) me, there is thousands of people."
As they crossed the pontoon bridge into Iraq, many Yazidis said they had lost family members.
"I put two of my sons on one vehicle sent to pick us up. Then I went to grab this one and went back to the car, but it had left already. That's why I had to walk halfway to here alone. Another car took me at some point and we finally arrived here. I have three children, this one is with me but I have lost the others. I haven't seen the other children or my husband since then. "
Followers of an ancient religion, linked to Zoroastrianism, the Yazidis have lived in peace with Iraqi Kurds. They say the Islamic State militants gave them the choice of converting to Islam or being killed.
A delegation of American Yazidis met with State Department officials in Washington Monday, to seek more U.S. support in fighting the extremists.
"This is so big because even if they convert to Islam they [the extremists] will not like that and leave them alone, no. [They will demand that] Men go to fight with them, to be jihadist. Women are taken to the slave markets to be sold. So this is what happened. So I would say the American government, the State Department, they understand that. We got promises from the people that we met that they will do their best with other agencies in the government to provide this urgent action that we asked them."
The United States has been urging Iraq to form a more inclusive government. President Barack Obama expressed hope Monday that Iraq's new government will make the necessary changes. Haider al-Abadi, who has been named to replace Nouri al-Maliki as prime minister, called on all Iraqi groups to unite.
" I have confidence that with the people and political blocs we will be able to overcome this barbaric and savage attack on the Iraqi people and provide a good environment for the Iraqi people to live in."
Mr. Abadi has 30 days to form a new government, even as Mr. al-Maliki refuses to step down.
