ອີງຕາມສູນກາງສະຖິຕິ ກ່ຽວກັບ ການສຶກສາແຫ່ງຊາດ, ນັກຮຽນຊັ້ນ ມັດທະຍົມປາຍທີ່ລະບຸວ່າເປັນຊາວໝູ່ເກາະປາຊີຟິກ ມີອັດຕາການອອກ ໂຮງຮຽນສູງທີ່ສຸດຢູ່ໃນ ສະຫະລັດ. ແຕ່ຄູສອນທີ່ເປັນຊາວອົບພະຍົບຄົນນຶ່ງໃນໝູ່ເກາະ ມາຣີນາ ເໜືອ (Northern Mariana Islands) ມີເປົ້າໝາຍທີ່ຈະປ່ຽນສິ່ງນັ້ນທັງໝົດ. ເຈັສຊິກາ ສໂຕນ (Jessica Stone) ນັກຂ່າວ VOA ມີລາຍງານກ່ຽວກັບເລື້ອງລາວຂອງນາງ.

ທ່ານນາງ ຣີອາ ນາຕຣານີ ອາຍຸ 30 ປີ ເຄີຍໄຝ່ຝັນຢາກເປັນຄູສອນຕັ້ງແຕ່ທີ່ ນາງຍັງເປັນເດັກນ້ອຍ, ໃນໄລຍະທີ່ຫາກໍເດີນທາງມາຈາກ ອິນເດຍໃໝ່ໆ ເພື່ອໄປສະຫະພັນລັດຂອງໝູ່ເກາະມາຣີນາເໜືອ ຫຼື CNMI, ເຊິ່ງເປັນດິນ ແດນຂອງ ສະຫະລັດ ໃນຂົງເຂດມະຫາສະໝຸດປາຊີຟິກ.
ທ່ານນາງ ຣີອາ ນາຕຣານີ, ຜູ້ນໍາການສຶກສາທາງດ້ານເທັກໂນໂລຈີແຫ່ງ CNMI ກ່າວວ່າ:
“ຂ້ອຍຈະຈັດວາງຕຸກກະຕາຈໍານວນນຶ່ງຂອງຂ້ອຍໃນທຸກໆມື້ ຫຼັງຈາກເລີກໂຮງຮຽນ ແລະທຳທ່າວ່າ ຂ້ອຍກໍາລັງສອນນັກຮຽນຢູ່ໃນຫ້ອງຮຽນ.”
ທຸກມື້ນີ້, ຫ້ອງຮຽນຂອງນາງແມ່ນເຕັມໄປດ້ວຍຄູສອນຄົນອື່ນໆ ທີ່ກໍາລັງ ພະຍາຍາມຮຽນຮູ້ວິທີທີ່ຈະເອົາຊະນະອຸປະສັກກ່ຽວກັບການສຶກສາຂອງບັນດາ ນັກຮຽນໃນໝູ່ເກາະມາເຣຍນາສ, ເຊິ່ງເປັນບ່ອນທີ່ມີຈໍານວນປະຊາກອນ 38 ເປີເຊັນ ຍັງໃຊ້ຊີວິດຢູ່ໃນຄວາມທຸກຍາກ, ແລະເປັນບ່ອນທີ່ພາຍຸເຂດຮ້ອນ ສາມາດຍົກເລີກການເຂົ້າໂຮງຮຽນເປັນເວລາຫຼາຍເດືອນຕິດຕໍ່ກັນ, ແມ່ນແຕ່ ເລື່ອນເວລາສໍາລັບພິທີຈົບການສຶກສາປີ 2023 ຢູ່ທີ່ໂຮງຮຽນມັດທະຍົມປາຍ ມາເຣຍນາສ.

“ຖ້າ ດຣ. ນາຕຣານີ ບໍ່ໄດ້ມາເປັນຄູສອນ, ແລະນາງເອງກໍບໍ່ເຄີຍສອນ, ຂ້ອຍບໍ່ຮູ້ເລີຍວ່າ ຂ້ອຍຈະເຮັດແນວໃດ, ຫຼື ຂ້ອຍ ແລະ ເພື່ອນຮ່ວມຫ້ອງຮຽນ ຂອງຂ້ອຍຈະປັບຕົວເຂົ້າກັບສະພາບການຂອງສັງຄົມພວກເຮົາ ແລະການພັດ ທະນາຂອງລະບົບເທັກໂນໂລຈີເຫຼົ່ານີ້ ທີ່ດໍາລົງໄປຢ່າງຕໍ່ເນື່ອງໄດ້ແນວໃດ.”

30-year-old Riya (REE-a) Nathrani has yearned to teach since she was a young girl, newly arrived from India to CNMI, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, a US territory in the Pacific.

These days, her classroom is full other teachers…trying to learn how to overcome the barriers of educating students in the Marianas – where 38% of the population lives in poverty…….and tropical storms can cancel school for months at a time, even postponing the 2023 graduation ceremony at Marianas High School.

they're not really thinking about education at that time. And then when we finally do get back to school, we have this huge educational gap with where we left off a few months ago and where they're expected to be by the end of the year.11:37

Nathrani believes technology can help close that gap. Even before the pandemic standardized online learning for grade schools nationwide, she traveled the Marianas, training teachers to develop compelling online courses, implementing distance education to supplement staff shortages on the remote islands, and teaching students to build spreadsheets, create graphics and write resumes.

When you enter her classroom space, it’s wonderful because the kids get a chance to access learning that they otherwise would not have access to.
One of those changed lives is high school senior Jane Mozunder.

If Dr. Nathrani never became a teacher, she never taught, I don’t know how I would, or how me and my peers would adapt to the ongoing society that we have and the development of technology.
Mozunder will enter college in the fall and is considering a career in education. For Nathrani, that choice is the definition of her own success.
