US stocks saw their largest single day drop Monday after the Dow Jones industrial average plunged nearly 1200 points, losing more than 4.6 per cent of its value. The S&P 500 lost more than 100 points.
Monday's Dow sell-off, the biggest point decline in history, comes after Friday's slide when the Dow lost 666 points. That drop followed a solid jobs report that showed the US economy adding 200 thousand jobs and wages rising at the fastest pace in a decade. The tighter labor market and rising wages prompted investor fears of higher inflation and the possibility that the US Federal Reserve would raise interest rates faster and higher than they have in recent years.
Analysts who spoke with VOA had been expecting a stock market "correction" ((a decline of about 10% from recent highs)) as a result of the record run up in stock prices this year. PNC Financial Services chief economist Gus Faucher says such corrections are a healthy way to ease pressure on what some say is an overheated stock market. Others believe healthy corporate earnings justify the run up in stock prices. Still others see the recent declines as an opportunity for bargain hunters.
The stock market has now lost about a trillion dollars in value since Friday. Analysts say that could cause problems for President Donald Trump who has repeatedly taken credit for a strongly growing stock market.
