On the coast of Maine in an area known for its sailing, the industrial sewing machines that until recently sewed sails now make facemasks.

Owner and operator of North Sails, Eric Baldwin, says he and his staff of two learned how to make masks one Saturday morning and moved to full production by the afternoon.

Maine has more than 56-hundred ((5632)) kilometers of coastline. Sail boats and their maintenance drive much of the economy near the shore. Business slowed because of coronavirus pandemic, and one of Baldwin’s staff suggested making masks.

The CDC says fabric masks like these should only be a last resort after exhausting other options. As global supplies dwindle, businesses like North Sails may be the ones supplying that last resort.
