Local media reported several people, including a policeman and a member of the demolition team, were injured during the clash, and at least seven people were arrested.
The local government said the demolition was part of a road widening project and had advised residents of the shanty community to evacuate beforehand. But the residents said they were not informed of the order.
"We will be sleeping tonight on the streets and it is difficult with the weather being so unpredictable. I am just worried for the welfare of my family, especially my children who are so young."
Several slum communities around metropolitan Manila have been cleared in the past year to make way for infrastructure and property projects.
