Turkish security forces say they have made their first detentions in connection with the New Year's Eve night club attack, as a manhunt continues for the attacker. A grainy image of the suspected gunman taken from security camera footage has been released.
The detentions follow a claim of responsibility for the attack by Islamic State, which said in a statement on the internet that one of its, quote, "soldiers" targeted Turkey, which it said has sided "with countries of the cross." The group said the night club was targeted because it was a place where "Christians celebrated their apostles."
Political analyst Sinan Ulgen, of EDAM, an Istanbul-based political research group, says Islamic State's claim of responsibility should be taken seriously.

In a video released last week, Islamic State called on its supporters to launch attacks in Turkey. The video came against the backdrop of the Turkish military's ongoing battle to wrest control of the strategically important Syrian town of al-Bab from the jihadist group.
((OPT)) Citing security sources, Turkish media reported Monday the gunman in the night club attack is believed to have come from a Central Asian country, either Kyrgyzstan or Uzbekistan. Many Islamic State fighters are drawn from Central Asian countries and have used Istanbul as a base before traveling to fight in Syria. ((END OPT))

Funerals are continuing of those killed in the New Year's Eve attack, which was the fourth deadly attack the conducted by Islamic State in Istanbul in a year.
For this mourner there is both anger and despair.
