NEPAL ELEPHANT PAGEANT
A large crowd turned out for Nepal's third annual elephant beauty contest.
The decorated elephants paraded in front of judges, showcasing their skills at tasks such as passing a stick.
Organizers of the Chitwan Elephant Festival say the contestants are chosen from among 100 elephants.
Deependra Khatiwada, Coordinator of Judges, says:
"We evaluate each individual elephant by judging all year round performance of the elephants and also whether or not the mahouts use sharp devices(to control the elephant) or not. There are about 100 elephants in Chitwan of them only five are selected for the beauty pageant."
Organizers say the pageant also promotes the value of the mahout-elephant relationship.
The owners of this year's winners took home medals and a cash prize.
