U.S. automaker General Motors has issued another recall of millions of
vehicles amid a growing scandal over its slow response to a safety defect
in its cars and trucks.
The recalls announced Monday mostly involve faulty wiring that could
prevent the deployment of air bags in the event of a crash.
G.M. recalled 1.6 million vehicles last month for defective ignition switches
in compact cars built between 2003 to 2007. The automaker is facing numerous investigations for failing to issue a recall, even though it knew
about the problems for more than a decade.
The faulty ignition switches have been linked to 31 crashes and 13 deaths.
In a video message to employees Monday, G.M. chief executive officer Mary Barra pledged the automaker would move aggresively to improve its safety procedures.
"In each case, we have pledged to cooperate fully while we work to make the recall itself as smooth as possible for our customers. These are serious developments that shouldn't surprise anyone.. After all, something went wrong with our process in this instance, and terrible things happened."
Monday's recalls also involve a problem in the brake assembly of more than 60,000 luxury sedans that could cause engine fires.
General Motors says it expects to spend about $300 million to repair the vehicles involved in both recalls.
