A 100-year-old Japanese woman became the world's first centenarian to complete a 1,500-meter freestyle swimming competition.
Mieko Nagaoka set a world record for her age group at a masters swimming race last Saturday in the western city of Matsuyama, finishing at one hour, 15 minutes and 54 seconds.
The record is Nagaoka's 25th since she began swimming in her earlier 80s as part of a rehabilitation program for a knee injury.
She made her debut in the international swimming competition when she was 88. She took the bronze in the 50-meter backstroke in 2002 at a masters swim meet in New Zealand, followed by three silvers in 2004 at an Italian swim meet.
