China urged both sides of the Iranian nuclear negotiations to consider compromises to finalize a framework deal, as the process stretched into an extra day Wednesday in Switzerland.

"All parties must be prepared to meet each other halfway in order to reach an agreement," a Chinese statement said.

Delegations from Iran and a group that includes China, Britain, France, Russia, the United States and Germany missed their self-imposed deadline of midnight Tuesday, but agreed to continue talking.

The negotiations continued Wednesday with a meeting between Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif and his colleagues from Britain, Germany and the United States.Senior representatives from France, Russia and China were also taking part after their foreign ministers left the talks in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Russian state media quoted Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov saying late Tuesday the two sides had agreed in principle on the "key elements" of a deal, which would include measures to ensure Iran's nuclear program is peaceful in return for lifting economic sanctions.

But U.S. State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said that while there was enough progress to keep the talks going, "several difficult issues still remain."
