Former secretary of state Hillary Clinton continues to lead the Democratic field, but she is getting a stronger-than-expected challenge from Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. Hillary Clinton on the move, looking for votes in New Hampshire and showing rare emotion with an appeal for gun control.
"So many of the parents of these precious children who were murdered have taken the unimaginable grief that they have been bearing and have tried to be the voices that we need to hear."
But Clinton's poll ratings have suffered because of the controversy involving her private email account while secretary of state.
"That was a mistake. I am sorry about that. I take responsibility and I am trying to be as transparent as I can."
To help improve her image, Clinton appeared on NBC's Saturday Night Live comedy show.
"All anyone wants to talk about is Donald Trump."
"Donald Trump? Isn't he the one that's like, Ugh, you're all losers'?"
Yet Clinton's main rival, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, continues to surge, drawing huge crowds and even reaching out to conservatives at Liberty University in Virginia.
"We live, and I hope most of you know this, in the wealthiest country in the history of the world. But most Americans do not know that because almost all of that wealth and income is going to the top one percent."
Vice President Joe Biden is still weighing a presidential bid. But he is mourning the death of his son, Beau, in May, and told CBS Late Show host Stephen Colbert he remains conflicted.
"I do not think any man or woman should run for president unless, number one, they know exactly why they would want to be president. And number two, they can look at folks out there and say, 'I promise you, you have my whole heart, my whole soul, my energy, and my passion to do this."
Polls show many Democrats would be open to a Biden candidacy, says analyst Norm Ornstein.
"A lot of Democrats are uneasy about Clinton because of the email issue, and it evokes some of the old concerns about the Clintons and the degree to which they are targets of Republicans, the media, and some of their own self-inflicted wounds."
The doubts about Clinton clearly have some Democrats worried, says John Fortier.
"It may not be that they are absolutely dissatisfied with Hillary Clinton, but do they want another look at someone? And they do not want to just give it to her without the chance of some other significant figure being in the race."
Biden will not take part in the first Democratic debate, but is expected to decide soon whether to enter the race.
