Christians around the world are celebrating the annual observance of the religion's highest holy day -- the birth of Jesus.

Thousands of Christian pilgrims descended on the West Bank town of Bethlehem and walked through Manger Square, outside the centuries-old Church of the Nativity -- the site where Christians believe the Virgin Mary gave birth to Jesus.

Inside the church, Jerusalem's Latin patriarch Fuad Twal celebrated a Midnight Mass attended by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and European Union foreign policy chief Catherin Ashton.

At the Vatican, Pope Francis has urged the world's 1.2 billion Catholics to rejoice this Christmas because "Jesus is the light who brightens the darkness" and brings peace.

The pontiff delivered his first Christmas Eve homily as pope during a Mass at St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican Tuesday.

In Baghdad, Christian families took advantage of relative calm and intensive security measures in the Iraqi capital to attend a Christmas Eve service in the Church of Mar Youssef.

The service was attended by Iraq's leader of the Islamic Supreme Council, Ammar al-Hakim, who urged both Christians and Muslims to stand together against all forms of of extremist violence.

Hundreds of Iraqis have been killed in targeted attacks by Sunni insurgents on government buildings and security headquarters this year.

And in the Philippines, residents in the storm-wrecked coastal city of Tacloban attended a Christmas Day Mass in the city's damaged church Wednesday morning.
