Three people are dead after a strong earthquake struck in the waters off Indonesia's Java and Bali islands, adding more misery for the archipelago's disaster-weary residents.
All three fatalities occurred on Java, where several houses in the Sumenep district were crushed by the early morning 6.0 magnitude quake. Thousands of visitors on Bali island, which is hosting the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, streamed out of their hotels in panic as their buildings were jolted and shook.
There were no immediate reports of damage on Bali, and no tsunami warnings were issued.
Thursday's disaster occurred as rescuers spend a final day searching for any remaining bodies on Sulawesi island, where more than 2,000 people were killed in last month's devastating earthquake and tsunami. Most of the damage occurred in the city of Palu, where scores of homes were buried when the 7.5-magnitude quake turned wet soil into a river of mud, a process known as liquefaction. Officials believe as many as 5,000 people may be buried in the softened soil.
The search was supposed to end Thursday, but a spokesman for the national disaster agency says it has been extended until Friday at the request of families still searching for their missing loved ones.

Nearly 500 residents were killed by a string of earthquakes that struck the island of Lombok between August and September.
Indonesia is prone to disasters due to its location on the so-called "Ring of Fire," a series of underground fault lines and volcanoes in the Pacific Ocean Basin. A magnitude 9.1-magnitude earthquake off Sumatra island triggered a massive tsunami in December 2004 that killed 230,000 people in a dozen countries.
