Hundreds passengers stranded at sea on board the cruise ship MS Westerdam for days over fears of the new virus were allowed to disembark on Friday in Cambodia.

The passengers were greeted by cheers as they finally walked off the ship in the Cambodian port of Sihanoukville and were welcomed by Prime Minister Hun Sen, who handed flowers to the passengers.

Some 20 passengers were tested for the virus after they reported stomachaches or fever, but the tests done at the Pasteur Institute in Phnom Penh showed none had COVID-19, the deadly, fast-spreading coronavirus first reported in the Chinese city of Wuhan.

The government of Cambodia, which has strong ties to Beijing, allowed the stranded cruise liner to anchor off its coast Thursday morning.

The MS Westerdam, with 1,455 passengers and 802 crew on board, had previously been turned away by Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, Thailand and Guam.

The line has given each passenger a 100% refund of their cruise fare, plus an additional 100% future cruise credit. Passengers and crew received complimentary onboard internet and phone access to stay in contact with loved ones, a statement from the cruise line said.

Another cruise ship, the Diamond Princess, has been off the coast of Yokohama, Japan, for the last 10 days, with at least 218 passengers infected by the coronavirus.
