Hundreds of thousands of people rallied in Seoul until late Saturday night in what is so far the largest protest demanding the ouster of President Park Geun-hye.
For the fifth straight weekend, masses of protesters occupied major avenues in downtown Seoul over a corruption scandal that came to light earlier this year.
Police said about 270,000 people turned out Saturday, but organizers estimated the crowd at 1.5 million.
Around 25,000 police officers were mobilized to brace for possible violence, and to prevent protesters from marching inside the Blue House, the presidential palace where Park resides.
She is suspected of helping a long-time friend, Choi Soon-sil, who is accused of manipulating government affairs and extorting companies to build an illicit fortune.
Choi is alleged to have exercised a "cult-like" influence over Park and control over her staff, even though she had no official government role.
Choi is being investigated for exploiting her personal relationship with the president to coerce large corporations to donate more than $68 million to two sports foundations, and funneling much of that money to her private businesses.
Prosecutors investigating the case have indicted Choi and are seeking to question Park about her role in the scandal.
