In the wake of last year's terrorist attacks in Europe Trump has demanded a complete ban on Muslims entering the United States. He has also demanded tougher control on those already in the country.
Quinones told VOA that immigrants who are in the country legally have no reason to fear, Muslim or not.

"We are going to be targeting extreme Muslims who don't work within the true religion or the peaceful solutions. ... Anyone who wants to do harm, they are not wanted, they are not welcome, we'll pursue them.Anyone who comes here to the United States to be an integral part of our society and contribute to our society has absolutely no reason to fear -- no deportations, we won't be targeting, we won't be profiling."

Quinones also said there will be no mass deportation of undocumented workers.

"The only people that have to fear right now are the criminals. Yes, they will be deported. Those are massive -- 3 million plus. They will be deported. We are also going to deport the people who came on a tourist visa and overstayed their visa, because we need those people to come and enjoy the United States, all the good sites that we have, but if people are abusing their tourist visa to stay here permanently, we can't allow that."

The Trump administration plans to keep track of criminals and make sure that once deported, they cannot re-enter the United States.

"On the 21st (of January, the day after the new president swears in), we are going to check the databases to find out the criminals, where they are located. We are hiring 7,500 new border patrol agents who will work within the United States as well. So once we identify those people, we will start looking for them until we find them, and then we are going to deport them. Should they decide to ignore our rules and the message 'you are not wanted here in the United States,' they will be imprisoned."

Authorities in some major U.S. cities have said their cities will continue to offer sanctuary to illegal immigrants. Quinones said officials who defy the law could be charged criminally and their cities could lose federal funding for important projects.
