President Barack Obama has announced the final version of his "Clean Power Plan" to reduce carbon pollution from power plants by 32 percent by 2030.The president said this is the single most important step the United States has ever taken in the fight against climate change.But Republican opponents are vowing to fight the tougher standards in the courts and in Congress, saying they will hurt coal-mining states.VOA's Cindy Saine has the story from Washington.
Introducing the president, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Gina McCarthy was overjoyed.
"This is really such an incrediblywicked, cool moment!"
McCarthy said the EPA for the first time will adapt a rule that regulates carbon pollution from existing plants, so that greenhouse gas emissions are reduced at a faster rate.
For his part, Mr. Obama said that reversing global climate change is no longer about the future, but something that we are already feeling the effects of right now.
"There is such a thing as being too late when it comes to climate change."
But on the floor of the U.S. Senate, Republican Majority leader Mitch McConnell blasted the president's plan, saying it would hurt states that rely on coal, like his home state.
"And in Kentucky, these regulations would likely mean fewer jobs, shuttered power plants, and higher electricity costs for families and businesses. I will not sit by while the White House takes aims at the lifeblood of our state's economy."
McConnell has called on state governors to refuse to comply with the new standards.President Obama fired back.
"So if you care about low income and minority communities, start protecting the air they breathe and stop trying to rob them of their health care."
The president cited Pope Francis, who has said fighting climate change is a moral obligation. Mr. Obama said he plans to discuss the issue with the pontiff when he visits Washington next month.
