U.S. President Barack Obama and the first lady have celebrated Christmas in Mr. Obama's home state of Hawaii by calling on all Americans to honor military members and veterans.

The White House broadcast the president's weekly address two days early because of the special holiday message.

Michelle Obama joined him in saying American families are able to celebrate Christmas with their loved ones because U.S. troops are willing to hug theirs goodbye and step up to serve their country.

Mr. Obama said with U.S. involvement in the war in Afghanistan ending, it is time to reflect on what military members and their families have given everyone else.

Not forgetting the spirit behind Christmas, the president said the birth of Jesus is a message to love one another and reach out to the sick, the hungry, and the troubled.

The president enjoyed a Christmas Eve dinner Wednesday with his family and personally telephoned members of each branch of the U.S. armed forces to express his gratitude for their sacrifice.

He also planned to visit a Marine base in Kaneohe Bay to visit with servicemen and women.

The Pentagon says Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel also telephoned four selected service members to thank them for giving up their holiday to serve. Two are in Afghanistan and two are with the U.S. Central Command, which is leading the coalition fight against the Islamic State.

A spokesman says Hagel knows how difficult it is to be away from home on Christmas.
