Chinese authorities now say 91 people are now missing after a massive landslide that buried an industrial park in the southern city of Shenzhen in Guangdong Sunday.
Witnesses say "huge waves" of mud swept over the industrial park, leaving 33 building destroyed or damaged, including 14 factories, two office buildings, and three dormitories.More than 1,500 emergency workers are involved in the search and rescue efforts, working in a debris field covering over 50,000 square meters.
A statement by the Ministry of Land and Resources said a 100-meter tall mountain of construction waste and dirt stored at an old quarry site broke loose after a heavy rainstorm in the region.The landslide also triggered an explosion at a nearby natural gas pipeline owned by PetroChina, the country's top oil and gas producer.
China's official Xinhua news agency says the missing include 59 men and 32 women.About 900 people were evacuated from the site before the landslide struck.
China has been plagued by an increasing number of industrial accidents, which have been blamed on lax safety standards, poor oversight and corruption.Nearly 160 people were killed afterseveral explosions at a chemical storage facility in the northern port city of Tianjin back in August.Authorities arrested 12 company employees and 11 government officials in connection with the disaster.
