Thousands of protesters have blocked an airport runway in the Central African Republic, with some calling for the resignation of interim President Michel Djotodia.

The protest took place at the international airport in Bangui, where large groups of civilians have sought refuge from the country's spiraling violence.

The unrest has displaced tens of thousands of people.

French and African forces have been trying to disarm militias and quell the violence.

The unrest began in March when mostly Muslim Seleka forces overthrew President Francois Bozize.

Much of the fighting since has been between ex-Seleka rebels and the Christian anti-balaka militias.

Relief organizations say more than 1,000 people have been killed.
