Larry is discussing his summer job with Ly. He’s telling her all about a dispute that happened in his office earlier that week.
To have a beef with someone

LL: The boss still wants to fire Jim because they had a beef over the last sales report.

Ly: They had a beef? What do you mean? Did they fight over food?

LL: No (laughing), not beef as in the beef that you eat. To have a beef with someone means to have a disagreement. The boss and Larry had a disagreement over the sales report.

Ly: Why did they have a beef over the report?

LL: Well, the boss felt that Jim had done a really bad job of preparing the report and Jim felt that the boss did not give him enough time to do the report properly.

Ly: Oh, I see. That is a beef.

LL: Yep. Now, the boss is making everyone else miserable because of his beef with Jim.

Ly: How is he making you miserable?

LL: He’s just been in a really bad mood and he’s being tough on everyone. It’s not fair. His beef is with Jim, not the rest of in the office.

Ly: You’re right that isn’t fair. Pretty soon, other people will have a beef with the boss if he keeps acting like that.

LL: Exactly. I’m worried that the situation will go too far and there will be major problems in our office.

Ly: Why don’t you ask Jim to apologize to the boss?

LL: I don’t think he’ll do that.

Ly: But if the Jim can resolve his beef with the boss, then the situation will be better for everyone else. Jim shouldn’t think only of himself.

LL: It’s worth a try. Maybe Jim will be willing to sacrifice his own interests and resolve his beef with the boss.

LL: The boss still wants to fire Jim because they had a beef over the last sales report. ຫົວໜ້າຍັງຢາກໄລ່ ຈິມອອກຢູ່ because they had a beef ຍ້ອນເລື່ອງລາຍງານການຂາຍສະບັບ ສຸດທ້າຍຫັ້ນ.

Ly: They had a beef? What do you mean? Did they fight over food?

LL: No (laughing), not beef as in the beef that you eat. To have a beef with someone means to have a disagreement. The boss and Jim had a disagreement over the sales report. To have a beef with someone

ບັດນີ້ ທ່ານຜູ້ຟັງ ແລະ ນ້ອງໆນັກສຶກສາ ຄົງຈະເຂົ້າໃຈດີຂຶ້ນແລ້ວ ເນາະ ສຳນວນ to have a beef with someone ກໍ່ຄື to have a dispute or a disagreement with somebody ມີການຜິດຖຽງ dispute ຫລື ຄວາມຂັດແຍ້ງ ບໍ່ເຫັນພ້ອມນໍາກັນ ກໍ່ຄື disagreement. To resolve r-e-s-o-l-v-e ແປວ່າ ແກ້ໄຂ. Ly suggested that Larry asked Jim to resolve his beef with the boss by apologizing to the boss.

LL: Hey, Li Hua, you really hit pay dirt with that suggestion you made. Jim apologized to the boss and everybody is happy now.

Ly: That’s great news! But, what does “hit pay dirt” mean?

LL: To hit pay dirt or to strike pay dirt means that you found something that turned out to be profitable or beneficial.

Ly: Where does the expression come from?

LL: When miners would dig for gold, they would say that they had struck or hit pay dirt when they found dirt that contained gold.

Ly: Oh, that makes sense!

LL: Anyway, I also hit pay dirt today.

Ly: How?

LL: I got a job offer for after I graduate.

Ly: That’s fantastic! You really did hit pay dirt! Who offered you the job?

LL: Actually, the office I’m working in offered me the job.

Ly: Really? Are you sure that you want to work there?

LL: At first, I wasn’t that interested, but when they told me what my salary would be, I realized that I’d really hit pay dirt.

Ly: Now, you don’t have to worry about your future! Hey, let’s go celebrate!

To hit pay dirt, hit

LH: Where does the expression come from?

LL: When miners would dig for gold, they would say that they had struck or hit pay dirt when they found dirt that contained gold.

LH: Oh, that makes sense!

LL: They sometimes say ‘strike pay dirt.’ Strike spells s-t-r-i-k-e, pay spells p-a-y, dirt spells d-i-r-t. Anyway, I also hit pay dirt today.

LH: How?

LL: I got a job offer for after I graduate.

LH: That’s fantastic! You really did hit pay dirt! Who offered you the job?

LL: Actually, the office I’m working in offered me the job.

LH: Really? Are you sure that you want to work there?

LL: At first, I wasn’t that interested, but when they told me what my salary would be, I realized that I’d really hit pay dirt.

LH: Now, you don’t have to worry about your future! Hey, let’s go celebrate!
