World News, 5/19/04: Wisconsin Teachers to Go to Laos to Learn More about Hmongs - 2004-05-19


A U-S military judge finds Army Specialist Jeremy Sivits guilty of abusing Iraqi prisoners during a court martial in Baghdad.

Sixteen teachers from the U-S state of Wisconsin are planning to go to Laos and Thailand to learn more about a growing segment of the state's students. Wisconsin is expected to accept at least 15-hundred ethnic Hmong minority refugees as soon as August. The refugees currently live in a temple in Thailand.

The Asian Development Bank says it plans to lend the government of Laos nearly 28-million dollars in two seperate loans. A bank official tells the French News Agency the money will be used for road projects in rural areas linking the country to Thailand and Vietnam.

Palestinian witnesses and doctors say an Israeli helicopter gunship and tanks have opened fire on a group of protesters in the Rafah refugee camp. At least 10 protesters are reported dead and dozens of others wounded.
