Pakistan's military launches an operation in remote areas near the border with Afghanistan to flush out suspected al-Qaida terrorists and Taleban holdouts.

North Korea says it will agree to freeze its nuclear program only after its demands for compensation are met. China's Xinhua news agency reported the statement from the North Korean foreign ministry today (Tuesday). It came as delegations from China, Japan, Russia, North and South Korea and the United States gathered in Beijing for a new round of talks on Pyongyang's nuclear ambitions.

Moroccan officials say at least 42 people were killed in an earthquake that shook the northern part of the country.
