Laos Education Faces with High Drop Out Rate

Ministry of Education reports that one of the most important problems challenging Laos today is a high drop out rate from primary and secondary school systems, especially in the rural areas. It said in the 2006-2007 academic year, there were more than 50,000 students had dropped out from the schools around the country.

Lao Ministry of Education, however, said it will step up efforts to control the drop out rate not to exceed 2 percent of the total students around the country for the 2007-2008 academic year.

But in the first half of this academic year, it appeared that there are almost 2 percent of the students already dropped out from the primary and secondary schools through out Laos.

For this academic year, the drop out rate from the schools in the urban areas also increased due to the economic problems. Most of the rural areas drop out mainly is due to poverty.
