Dam Constructions, Logging, and Reef Blastings Severely Damage Mekong and Environment

A new SEARIN report shows that dam constructions, reef blastings in the Mekong as well as logging in Burma and Laos have severe impacts on the environment and the livelihoods of the people living in the region.

Some of the impacts are severe floods during rainy seasons and severe draught in dry seasons in the Lower Mekong Sub-region. The report says reef blastings to facilitate navigation from southern China to the Laotian town of Luang Prabang via Burma have slowed down the flow of the Mekong river and destroyed breeding grounds for the fish, thus destroying the livelihoods of the people who live along the Mekong.
