New Protests Against Police Brutality in Many US Cities
Thousands of outraged protesters have marched in cities across the United States against a grand jury decision not to indict a white New York City policeman in the choking death of an unarmed black man.
Angry New Yorkers marched Thursday through Manhattan and across the East River into Brooklyn, where they lay down on a city street for a "die-in." Cardboard coffins painted with the names of victims killed by police flanked the demonstrators.
Chicago police kept marchers from disrupting an NFL football contest, but they succeeded in blocking a major highway. Earlier in the day, Denver high school students walked out of their classes.
Large demonstrations also were held in Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Detroit.
A grand jury decided Wednesday not to put white New York police officer Daniel Pantaleo on trial in the chokehold death of black crime suspect Eric Garner.
A cellphone video clearly showed Pantaleo arresting Eric Garner and holding his arm around Garner's neck as he brought the suspect to the ground. Garner, who was overweight and suffered from asthma, repeatedly gasped "I can't breathe!"
The medical examiner ruled Garner's death was a homicide as a result of the chokehold. The New York City Police Department banned the use of the chokehold in 1993.
Garner had been arguing with several police officers who accused him of illegally selling untaxed cigarettes.
New York City says it is going to retrain its 20,000 police officers in how to handle suspects.Mayor Bill de Blasio said Thursday it is essential police treat people of all races equally.
U.S. civil rights leaders condemned Wednesday's grand jury decision and other recent police killings of unarmed blacks by white officers.
National Urban League president Marc Morial said the incidents represent the "abject, absolute failure" of the U.S. criminal justice system. He said the grand jury decision "defied common sense."
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is urging U.S. leaders to respond to demands for greater accountability of law enforcement officials. The U.N. is headquartered in New York.
The decision not to put Pantaleo on trial comes less than two weeks after a grand jury in Ferguson, Missouri declined to indict a white officer who fatally shot an unarmed black teenager, Michael Brown, during a street confrontation.
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said the Justice Department is conducting federal civil rights investigations into the deaths of Garner and Brown.He acknowledged, "The time has come do do even more."
Holder spoke in Cleveland, Ohio, where a police officer who reportedly had a poor performance record gunned down a 12-year-old black boy in a public park as he was waving what turned out to be a toy pistol.
